The Origin and Meaning of the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the four major traditional festivals in China, whose origin and connotation blends nature worship, remembrance of historical figures, and folk wisdom, and was mainly formed during the Warring States period.
1.Nature Worship and the Culture of Warding Off Evil
Ancient people believed that the fifth month of the lunar calendar was the ‘month of poison’, when snakes and insects were active and dampness and heat were prevalent, so they derived from the custom of hanging moxa and wearing scented sachets to ward off evil spirits and prevent epidemics.
2.Family and national sentiments of historical figures
The most widely circulated version of the festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a poet from the state of Chu during the Warring States period. As he threw himself into the river because he was worried about his country, the people used rice dumplings to throw themselves into the river and dragon boat races to send their condolences, forming the core rituals of the festival.

Rice Dumplings
The flavours are very different between the North and the South: the North is dominated by sweet dumplings with red dates and bean paste, while salted egg yolk and fresh meat dumplings are prevalent in the South, and the meat dumplings of Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, have been classified as the ‘top stream of the dumplings sector
Five Poisons Cake (Northern): the pastry is printed with five poisons motifs, which means to fight poisons with poisons, and the filling is mostly rose or jujube paste.
Pan-fried piles (Fujian): made of deep-fried flour, symbolising the mending of the sky to stop the rain, reflecting the reverence for nature in the farming culture
Xionghuang Wine: In the Yangtze River Valley, it is said that ‘Drinking Xionghuang Wine will keep the demons away’, but in modern times, it is less commonly consumed due to the perception of toxicity.

Japan: Dragon Boat Festival evolved into ‘Boys' Day’, with carp flags flown to pray for bravery.
