Origin of Father's Day
In 1909, Mrs Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington State, USA, while attending a Mother's Day event, associated herself with her father, William Smart, who was raising six children on his own. His father had died in 1909 of exhaustion after his wife's illness and his death as both a father and a mother.
Mrs Dodd wrote to the state government advocating for a Father's Day and suggested that her father's birthday (5 June) be the day of observance
The world's first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, on 19 June 1910 (the 3rd Sunday in June)
